The chance to nab a cross country conference title is tonight at Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club when Wapello hosts the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet.
Six KCII area cross country teams will be competing including Columbus Community, Highland, Lone Tree, Hillcrest Academy, Winfield-Mt. Union, and WACO. The heavy favorite on the boys’ side will be No. 1 in Class 2A Danville/New London, but Columbus Community has a chance to finish near the top of the standings. The Wildcats are ranked 17th in the latest poll by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches and Freddy Vergara is slotted as 19th in the individual rankings. Columbus is the only area girls team that has enough for a team score, but Hillcrest Academy’s Leah Bontrager will compete near the top. The senior is a multi-time state qualifier and recently accomplished her first individual race championship at English Valleys last month.
WACO Warrior Head Coach Caylon DeVaul is excited about this course. “It is a nice course with a good layout. It is nothing crazy, but is probably not going to be the fastest course we have been on. Our conference has several good teams and we haven’t seem them all. It will be good to compete against those schools and see how we stack up.”
The conference action begins at 4:30 p.m. today in Wapello.
