The final regular season Friday has come to Dwight G. Sattler Field in Wellman tonight as the Mid-Prairie football team welcomes Centerville for Senior Night. The Golden Hawks enter play at 3-3 on the year, 2-1 in class 2A district six after a heartbreaker on the road last week, falling to Williamsburg on the Raiders Homecoming 24-21 on a late touchdown. For the year, Mid-Prairie is led by Will Cavanagh at 53 of 80 for 731 yards and nine touchdowns to just three interceptions. He leads the state with a 66.2% completion percentage. Jack Pennington has 17 catches to lead the Golden Hawk receiving corps with 191 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The ground game features Tyler Helmuth with 41 carries for 377 yards, his 9.2 yard per carry average is second best in 2A to go along with nine touchdowns. The Golden Hawks average 300 yards per game as a team, 181 of that on the ground. Justice Jones leads a Mid-Prairie defense that’s giving up just 17 points per game with 48 and a half tackles, that total is ninth in 2A.
Centerville is also 3-3 on the year, standing at 1-2 in class 2A district six after recording their first district win a week ago against Eddyville Blakesburg 55-20. They were led by an exceptional effort on the offensive side of the ball, posting 545 yards of total offense, 442 of that from quarterback Sawyer Wardlow on his way to eight touchdowns in the win. On the season, Wardlow has been dynamic. He is 65 of 131 passing for 898 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions. Leading pass catcher for the Big Reds is Jayden Ruiz with 24 grabs for 264 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Wardlow is also the leader on the ground at 97 carries for 646 yards and 12 touchdowns. His scoring run total is third in 2A. He is sixth in 2A with 18 total touchdowns and eighth in 2A with 1,544 yards. The Big Reds put up 360 yards per game, 200 of that through the air. Brody Tuttle has a team best 46 tackles for a unit giving up 30 points per game. This week, Mid-Prairie head coach Pete Cavanagh talked about the keys to slowing down Centerville and recording a win. “We have to slow down their quarterback. We’ll have new starters and some different guys in different spots on defense so we are working to get them up to speed. If we can be disciplined on that side of the ball and perform and create some turnovers we should be alright. Offensively, we need to continue to move the ball like we have the last few weeks.”
These two schools have never met on the football field. Mid-Prairie will honor 10 seniors including Will Cavanagh, Jackson Pennington, Jarrett Hoffman, Evan Hall, Tyler Helmuth, Justice Jones, Sam Harris, Cael Garvey, Zane Fisher, and Gannon Callahan. You can hear all of the action live tonight on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIradio.com, beginning with the Washington HyVee pregame show at 7p.m. and Systems Unlimited kickoff at 7:30 from Dwight G.
