It was a playoff atmosphere with much on the line in Winfield on Friday and No. 7 WACO left town with a 47-20 victory over the Wolves in week seven.
The Henry County Rivalry started in the Wolves favor when they marched right down the field on the opening drive capped off by a 15 yard touchdown reception from Cam Buffington to Abram Edwards. The WACO offensive line and Simeon Reichenbach went to work with three first half rushing touchdowns that paved the way to a 26-14 advantage at the break. The Wolves scored again right out of break to make it a one score game, but a couple more Reichenbach end zone trips kept WMU at arm’s length the rest of the way. Reichenbach toted the rock 15 times for 113 yards and four rushing touchdowns with one more on the receiving end of a 39 yard scoring strike. Isaac Oswald made the offense multi-dimensional in this one by completing nine of 13 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns to Reichenbach, Jon Rice, and Drew Diers. They outgained the Wolves 377-288 and were plus three in the turnover margin headlined by two picks from Mason Miller.
Warrior Head Coach Chad Edeker tells KCII Sports getting the pass game going was crucial given what the Wolves were throwing at them. “They rushed the passer hard so we threw a couple screens and they worked nice. Simeon had some long plays and Jon Rice did as well coming out of the backfield. They were really committed to stopping the run by throwing a lot of guys at the line of scrimmage so we were able to go play action and complete some passes.”
WMU’s Buffington had exactly 143 yards on the ground and 143 through the air while completing 14 of 26 passes. Noah Sparrow had the other rushing touchdown.
WACO concludes a perfect regular season at 8-0, captures the 8-player district 6 crown outright, and has a bye this week before being slotted as a number one seed in the first round of the playoffs on October 22nd. WMU is now 4-2 and is playing for their postseason lives on Friday against English Valleys (5-1).
