The finals of the River Valley Conference volleyball tournament will be held Thursday night at Wilton High School and include the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks. The Hawks advanced to tonight’s competition after splitting a pair of matches in the prelims Tuesday at Monticello, where they swept Iowa City Regina before being swept by Monticello. After the split, the Hawks are 15-12 on the year and an even 5-5 in RVC play.
For the season, Mid-Prairie is led by junior Ella Groenewold with 181 kills sixth in the River Valley and 87 blocks fourth in 3A, junior Landry Pacha with 516 assists third in the RVC and freshman Dakota Mitchell with 384 digs fifth in 3A.
The Golden Hawks will open action in the quarterfinals of the single elimination tournament against the West Liberty Comets. West Liberty is 32-3 overall, 8-1 in the River Valley. They are ranked No. 7 in class 3A in the latest poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The Comets advanced to the RVC tournament final bracket by sweeping Durant, Northeast and North Cedar on Tuesday. For the season the Comets are led by Macy Daufeldt’s 463 kills most in the state in 3A, Brooklyn Buysse’s 757 assists sixth highest total in 3A and Monica Morales’ 494 digs second most in 3A. The Comets swept the Golden Hawks earlier this year in Wellman.
Joining the Hawks and Comets tonight at Wilton are Anamosa, Monticello, North Cedar, Tipton, West Branch and the No. 2 in 2A Beavers. Action starts tonight at 5p.m. and continues into the evening at Wilton High School.
