Plans to bring new patrons to a downtown Washington restaurant that has been shuttered for 15 years are one step closer to becoming reality.
Main Street Washington was announced this week to receive a $100,000 grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority for the revitalization of the historic Winga’s Cafe. Twelve other Main Street Iowa communities also received Main Street Iowa Challenge grants, with costs of the projects reaching over $3.6 million. Edward and Isabella Santoro purchased the Winga’s Cafe building last December and plan to open a restaurant as “The Northside Diner.” The City of Washington gave $25,000 to support the grant application, as the building renovations are estimated at $341,000. The Santoros have already begun renovation of the building which had incurred water damage, mold, and other issues, and they hope to complete work by fall of 2022.
