The Winfield-Mt. Union volleyball team will look to spring the upset trap in the class 1A regional semifinals tonight when they travel to Burlington to take on the top ranked Notre Dame Nikes. WMU advanced through the quarterfinals with a hard fought five set win over Wapello in the Arrows home gym Wednesday. The win for the Lady Wolves was the second of the season against Wapello, and the fourth meeting of the year between the two squads. Winfield-Mt. Union comes into Monday with a 22-10 overall record. On the year, WMU is led by Bradie Buffington’s 187 kills fourth in the SEISC North, Keely Malone’s 506 assists, most in the Superconference North and 440 digs from Keetyn Townsley, fifth most in 1A.
Burlington Notre Dame is 32-8 this season and ranked No. 1 in class 1A in the final poll of the regular season issued by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. They opened the playoffs Wednesday with a sweep of Lone Tree in Burlington. For the year, the Nikes are led by Gabby Deery with 371 kills, fifth in the state. Jenna Bentz has 817 assists, fourth in 1A and Ava Parkins has a team best 306 digs, seventh in the Superconference South. These two teams met September 25th at Southeastern Community College in the championship bracket of the Southeast Iowa Superconference Tournament, with the Nikes taking the match by sweep 25-14 and 25-21. The winner of this match moves to Wednesday’s regional final in Muscatine, one victory from the state tournament in Cedar Rapids. Action starts tonight at 7p.m. at Father Minnett Gymnasium in Burlington.
