In a playoff rematch from a classic in 2020, the Sigourney-Keota football team had history repeat itself on Friday when they welcomed Waterloo Columbus Catholic for a class 1A round of 16 bout at the Snake Pit and the home Cobras emerged once again with a 18-7 triumph.

A Colten Clarahan touchdown and 42 yard field goal early helped the Cobras hold a 9-7 lead late in the first half when the senior decided to deliver the most exciting play of the day. In the final ticks of the second quarter, he nailed the longest field goal by any kicker in the state this year with a 52 yarder. The elated Cobra bunch carried that 12-7 halftime advantage into the third where the defense did the rest and held a potent Sailor (7-3) offense scoreless the rest of the way. Clarahan was responsible for every Cobra point by rushing 16 times for 110 yards and a score, threw one pass of 22 yards to Cade Streigle that reached pay dirt, and the two boots through the uprights. To top it off, the 6’1’’ 180 pound do it all guy led the defense with 6.5 tackles. Cade Molyneux tallied 111 yards on 36 carries for a team that amassed 273 yards rushing. Columbus registered 241 yards with dual threat quarterback Carter Gallagher finishing 15 of 29 for 181 yards and one interception to Cole Clarahan.

Head Coach Jared Jensen tells KCII Sports that field goal was a thing of beauty. “We expect touchdowns, but just to add that field goal ability is huge. Our guys were jacked up when he piped that through and that led us right into halftime. It was a close game at that point with both teams having some mistakes, but that play put us over the top. Our momentum was at all time high at half and that carried us the rest of the way.”

S-K moves to 10-0 and advance to their second straight quarterfinal round where they will travel to Dike-New Hartford (10-0) on Friday with a return trip to the UNI-Dome on the line.
