A pair of KCII area teams will take the floor tonight at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman when Mid-Prairie hosts Winfield-Mt. Union in a Hall of Pride Game. The Golden Hawks were 15-8 overall a season ago, 14-5, second place in the south division of the River Valley Conference. They made their first district championship game appearance since 2010. The Hawks return four of their five starters from last year’s team and five of their top six scorers, 90% statistically, including third team all-stater Carter Harmsen. Harmsen led the Golden Hawks a year ago at 18 points per game and seven rebounds per contest. The Golden Hawks return assist and steals leader Jack Pennington who averaged four and three respectively. Also returning is his guard court teammate Will Cavanagh, both were all-conference, three point specalist Alex Bean and Ethan Kos who gave the Hawks valuable minutes off the bench in the post behind last year’s all-conference center Aidan Rath.
Winfield-Mt. Union was 9-10 overall last season, 6-7 and in the Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division. The Wolves return three of their top four scorers from last year, led by Cam Buffington and Abram Edwards who were freshman phenoms a season ago, combining to average 31 points, 20 rebounds, six assists, four blocks and three steals per game. Three point leader Konner Wade is also back, as a junior, he shot 35% from downtown.
This is a junior varsity and varsity event with the JV teams on the floor in Wellman at 4p.m. and the varsity teams matching up at 5:30. The contests will not count on the team’s official records but will be a full regulation game with normal conditions. Admission is $5 and proceeds benefit “Feed the Kids”.
