It was an emphatic start to the new campaign for the Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team when they hosted New London in the season opener on Friday and rolled to a 71-15 victory. 

It didn’t take long for the Wolves to take control in this one, as they jumped out to a 22-6 lead after one and 39-10 advantage at the break. A 21-4 third quarter quickly put the clamps on the program’s 17th consecutive regular season victory. Four Wolves finished in double figures led by Bradie Buffington with 17 points on eight of 15 shooting. Jobey Malone registered 13 points and five rebounds. Melina Oepping stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Keetyn Townsley rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 and the junior dished out three assists. The team shot 51% from the floor and assisted on 20 of 31 field goals. 

WMU starts the year 1-0 and they host Hillcrest Academy (0-1) tonight.
