The fast start to the season continued for the Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams on Saturday when they both stayed undefeated with a sweep of Van Buren.
A trip to Keosauqua started with a bang for the WMU girls by racing out to a 18-6 lead after one and 33-10 at the break. They continued to win the final two quarters and the Wolves put it away for a 53-26 victory. Size advantage was once again apparent in the rebounding battle with the Wolves dominating the stat by a 35-15 count and they forced 32 Warrior (0-4) turnovers. Bradie Buffington paced the team with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Jobey Malone cashed in with 13 points, Keetyn Townsley had 11, and Melina Oepping forced seven steals.
The nightcap was practically over after eight minutes when WMU pounded away to a 21-2 lead in the first. They used that start to upend the Warriors (1-2) by a final score of 62-43. Cam Buffington capped off a remarkable first week with his second 30 point game. He tallied 30 points on 13 of 20 shooting and brought in 14 rebounds. Through three games, the sophomore has averaged 29 points and 14.7 rebounds a night while shooting 65% from the floor. Konner Wade was also in double figures with 13 points and Abram Edwards had eight boards.
The girls improve to 5-0 and the boys are 3-0. They both get back on the court tonight hosting Lone Tree.
