The Washington County Board of Supervisors approved the first reading of a proposed ordinance for the establishment of a Local Option Sales and Services tax for the incorporated and unincorporated areas of the county.

Washington County’s local option sales tax is 1% in addition to the 6% statewide sales tax, and is considered every 10 years. County Auditor Dan Widmer explained that the only cities in the county that have a sunset date on the tax are Brighton and Riverside, who both passed public measures in the November election to continue the tax. The supervisors expressed uncertainty on the cities’ positions on the tax, though the ordinance presented by Widmer states that Brighton’s tax has been extended until repealed, and Riverside’s shall continue to June 30th, 2032. The board approved the first reading for the tax with all but Marcus Fedler in favor. The supervisors also directed Widmer to follow up with Brighton and Riverside.
