Four area teams were recognized in this week’s Iowa high school boys basketball poll issued by the Associated Press.
The Washington Demons skyrocketed into the rankings thanks to a 4-0 start to the season that includes an 82-69 win at No. 2, defending class 3A state champion Pella on December 7th. Washington also has wins this year over Fairfield, Centerville and Burlington. The Demons moved from unranked a week ago into this week’s class 3A poll at No. 5.
Mid-Prairie appears in this week’s class 2A poll as a school receiving votes. This is the Golden Hawks first recognition of the season by the Associated Press. They are riding a four game unbeaten streak to start the year that includes victories over West Liberty, Tipton, Iowa City Regina and North Cedar.
In class 1A, Winfield-Mt. Union and WACO are still in the receiving votes category. The Wolves are 4-0 on the season with wins against Pekin, Highland, Van Buren and Lone Tree. WACO stands at 5-1 for the year with wins against Holy Trinity Catholic, Columbus, Cardinal, Keota and Van Buren to go along with a lone setback against New London earlier this month.
