In a pair of battles for early season positioning at the top of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division, the Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams split a doubleheader on Tuesday at Mediapolis.

The WMU boys got it done at the defensive end in this one with points coming at a premium in a 37-23 victory. The Wolves kept the previously undefeated Bulldogs (5-1) to single digits in every quarter by leading 14-12 at half, 24-16 after three, and a 13-7 fourth quarter to seal the deal. WMU turned it over just 10 times in the win. Carter Loyd led the team off the bench with 13 points and Cam Buffington had 10. Abram Edwards hauled in seven rebounds and Andrew Brown dished out six assists.

The girls game was a much higher scoring affair with the Wolves being handed their second consecutive setback in a 69-44 loss. Mediapolis (7-0) led 32-21 at half, 51-33 after three, and continued to stretch it out in the fourth. WMU lost the rebounding department 29-25 and coughed up the ball 20 times compared to eight turnovers for the Bulldogs. Keetyn Townsley and Bradie Buffington each finished with 14 points, Jobey Malone added nine, and Melina Oepping recorded 10 rebounds.

The WMU boys stay perfect at 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the SEISC. The girls fall to 6-2 and 4-1 in the league. Both teams host Wapello tomorrow.
