A Kalona woman must pay restitution for making false claims to the Iowa Department of Human Services.

Court documents show that 51-year-old Cari Ann Break pleaded guilty in October to an amended charge of third-degree fraudulent practice, an aggravated misdemeanor. Break’s judgment has been deferred and she has been placed on one year of probation. The state ordered this December to suspend a $855 civil penalty pending successful completion of probation. Though she was also ordered to pay a total of $11,233 in victim restitution by minimum monthly payments of $50 starting January 15th until the sum is paid in full.

Break was arrested last July as an affidavit stated that from November 2014 to November 2019 she unlawfully and intentionally reported to DHS a false number of household members in order to obtain more public assistance through SNAP benefits. She was originally charged with first-degree fraudulent practice, a class C felony.
