The Iowa Football Coaches Association announced their Academic All-State teams for the 2021 season and a pair of Golden Hawks were recognized.
Golden Hawks Will Cavanagh and Justice Jones were named to the 2A team for their work on the field and in the classroom in the recently completed season.
Jones was named Class 2A third team all-state this year by the Iowa Print Sports Writers and Iowa Coaches Associations. He was also a first team all-district performer. A three year starter on the Mid-Prairie defense, Jones led the Hawks in tackles with 69 and a half this season, the third straight year he has led the team. He had 13 tackles for loss, 10th most in 2A along with a pair of sacks. He also intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble. He finished second in Mid-Prairie history with 267 career tackles.
Cavanagh was a second team all-district pick at quarterback. He was 88 of 145 through the air for 1,086 yards, 14 touchdowns and five interceptions. His 61% completion percentage was fifth in 2A, his five interceptions were the third fewest. He also rushed for 349 yards and five touchdowns on 85 carries. His completion percentage this year was best in Mid-Prairie history. His 14 scoring throws are the third most in a single year for the program with his 15 career touchdown passes eighth most.
To be eligible, a student athlete must be a senior starter with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or better, be involved in other extra-curricular activities and nominated by their head coach. Mid-Prairie finished the year with a 6-4 record.
