The first action of 2022 is tonight for a few area wrestling teams when Washington hosts a quadrangular to start the second half of the season.

The Demons will entertain area schools Columbus Community/Winfield-Mt. Union and WACO as well as Southeast Conference foe Fort Madison. In the latest IAwrestle.com rankings poll, Washington is represented at 113 lbs with freshman Aaron Boone ranked 11th in class 2A. Lane Scorpil is ranked second for the Wildcats at 120 lbs in 2A and WACO’s Jonah Clark is sixth at 220 lbs in class 1A and teammate Louden Huisenga is 10th at 145 lbs. Fort Madison has three represented in class 3A with Gavin Wiseman 10th at 152 lbs, Jakob McGowan 11th at 182 lbs, and Teague Smith 12th at 160 lbs.

In addition to the duals, Washington is honoring youth wrestlers before the meet and will host their annual Cancer Awareness Night, something head coach Brent Van Weelden says is a big deal every season. “We have done Cancer Awareness Night for many years and after the first dual we will ask for donations. Our managers and cheerleaders will walk around the stands for those donations and that money will be combined with the basketball teams Cancer Awareness Night on Monday, January 10th. All of that money will then go to The University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.”

The meet gets underway at 6 p.m. tonight in Washington.
