Another signature win can be added to the resume for the No. 7 ranked Washington boys’ basketball team, as they traveled to Coe College in Cedar Rapids on Saturday and upended No. 3 Ballard 77-68 in the Wells Fargo Advisors Shootout.
The second night of a back-to-back showed no signs of fatigue for the Demons, as the offense was humming along early hitting 10 of 14 shots in the first quarter and they led 26-16 after eight minutes. Washington took advantage of the absence of 6’6’’ post player Kale Krogh and dominated the paint to lead 39-31 at intermission. A quick 8-2 Demon run to start the third set the tone for the rest of the night and the game never got closer than two possessions again. The Demons held off the Bomber attack just enough despite Ashton Hermann leading all scorers with 33. Travis Leyden and Lucas Kroll paced the Demons with 19 points a piece. Kroll completed a double-double by adding 12 rebounds. Washington improves to 9-1 overall and they return to the court tonight against Burlington Notre Dame (4-6).
The Demon girls (1-8) will also be in action against the No. 7 ranked in class 1A Nikes (10-0). It will be Cancer Awareness Night in Washington with the girls’ game set to begin at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow. Listen to the doubleheader on FM 106.1 KCII.
