The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams are back on the floor Friday in Wellman when they host the West Liberty Comets in a River Valley Conference doubleheader. The Mid-Prairie girls are 7-5, on the year and 7-4, fourth place in conference, after a come from behind win over Durant on the road Tuesday 52-48. Maddie Nonnenmann led Mid-Prairie with 21 points. On the season, the Hawks rank in the top 10 in 3A with 13 assists and 13 steals per game. Individually, Nonnenmann’s 16 points per game are third in the RVC south. Landry Pacha’s seven rebounds per game are fifth in the RVC, Amara Jones leads the south at four steals per game, her four assists are fifth.
West Liberty is 9-3 overall, 8-2, second place in the south division. They are ranked No. 9 in class 3A in this week’s poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Tuesday they won at Wilton 46-36 with Macy Daufeldt scoring 25 points. The Comets top stats in the conference include Daufelt second with 18 points per game, she’s also third in the league with nine boards per outing. Sailor Hall’s four assists per night are third in the RVC. Pearson Hall’s three steals are tied for the league lead. West Liberty has beaten Mid-Prairie seven straight times including a 61-38 victory in November of this year. This week, Golden Hawk head coach Danny Hershberger talked about what to expect from the Comets and how his team can reverse that trend. “We’ve done a better job as of late taking care of the ball. West Liberty is a team that likes to pressure and trap. Early in the year that gets to teams. I think our team has done a really great job of growing to handle pressure and trapping and be successful taking care of the ball in those situations. That’s something we are going to have to do again Friday. West Liberty is a tough matchup because they have athletic guards and a division one athlete in the post with Macy Daufeldt that can beat you in a lot of different ways.”
The Mid-Prairie boys enter tonight with a perfect 12-0 record after an 81-55 win at Durant, led by 22 points from this week’s JET Physical Therapy Athlete of the Week Carter Harmsen. They are atop the River Valley standings at 10-0. The Golden Hawks are ranked No. 9 in class 2A in this week’s poll from the Iowa Associated Press. The Golden Hawks 48% shooting from the floor is sixth in 2A, their nine turnovers are seventh fewest. Individually, Harmsen’s 20 points per game are second in the River Valley, his eight rebounds are also second. Jack Pennington’s four assists and two steals are also both second in the RVC.
West Liberty is 3-10 on the year, 1-9 in the River Valley. They lost to Wilton Tuesday 77-56 despite 20 points from Caleb Wulf. They are last in the River Valley in three point percentage, free throw percentage, points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game. Individual leaders include Wulf’s 16 points per game, fourth in the RVC, his six rebounds are sixth, and his two steals are second. Mid-Prairie has won the last 12 in the series including a 66-20 win last November to start the year.
