The Kalona City Council approved the plans and specifications and construction contract for a sanitary sewer connection project during their regular meeting Monday.

Following a recommendation from City Engineer Jack Pope, the council approved a contract with DeLong Construction who had the lowest bid of $65,435 for work on North 6th Street between K and L Avenue. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says that they received a total of six bids for the project that was estimated by the engineer to cost over $110,000. He shares what the project will entail, “The project is designed to provide a connection to our sanitary sewer. As growth has occurred, it allows us now to make that connection to help property owners eliminate some of the grinders or little mini lift stations to move the sanitary product that they have in their house.”

Schlabaugh says that this project should benefit the six current homeowners and two future homeowners on the Street. Approximately $40,000 from the city’s American Rescue Plan Act fund and $25,000 from the sewer reserve fund will be used to finance the project. Schlabaugh says that they anticipate construction to start in late February or early March with completion of the project two weeks afterwards.
