The Columbus Wildcats came up short in both ends of a Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division doubleheader at Pekin Tuesday night. The Wildcat boys were topped by the Panthers 59-53. Columbus led 12-11 after one but Pekin wrestled the lead away at 30-27 going to intermission. The Panthers extended the advantage to eight going to the fourth at 44-36 and the Columbus comeback fell short. The Wildcats were hot offensively, shooting 51% from the floor on the night including 75% from three point range. They could not overcome 17 turnovers. Grant Watson led the way with 15 points including four three pointers. Timothy Hills had 14 with four three pointers made. The Columbus boys are now 3-12 on the year.
The Wildcat girls fell by a 40-19 score. A slow first half was too much for Columbus to overcome, trailing 10-4 after the first quarter and 25-8 at half. Defenses dominated the second half with the two teams combining for just 26 points after the break. Pekin outrebounded the Wildcats by 14 in the win, but Columbus forced the Panthers into 18 turnovers. Cold shooting hindered the Wildcats, going just 27% from the floor with a total of eight made field goals. Lilly Coil had a team high 11 points for Columbus who drops to 2-12 on the year.
