Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk senior Carter Harmsen is the newest member of the 1,000 point club in program history. Harmsen got there during the Hawks win over the West Liberty Comets Monday at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman on a free throw late in the third quarter, part of his 27 point 14 rebound night.

Harmsen began the road to 1,000 with a 16 point night as a sophomore against West Liberty in the 2019 season opener. He finished that year scoring 12.2 points per game with 270 total. His junior year would see another uptick in output. Harmsen posted 18.3 points per night and 421 total. He reached the halfway point to 1,000 with his 500th point as part of a 14 point outing in a 66-51 loss at Camanche January 22nd, 2021. So far in his senior year he is averaging 20.7 points per game with 352 total points scored. In his 62 varsity games, Harmsen has been Mid-Prairie’s leading scorer in 41 of them. During that stretch, the Hawks have a 40-22 overall record.

Harmsen’s career total sits at 1,043 after the Golden Hawks 54-45 win at Bellevue Friday where he posted 16 to lead Mid-Prairie. That total is fifth in school history. He is the eighth Golden Hawk all-time to reach the 1,000 point milestone. He trails only Brent Showalter from 2000 in fourth with 1,047 points, Steve Mast from 1971 in third with 1,160 points, Randy Jirsa from 1998 in second with 1,433 points and Travis Kern, the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,503 points from 2005. He has already passed 1,000 point club members Tanner Miller with 1,000 from 2010, Darian Patterson with 1,022 from 2008 and Kelby Bender with 1,031 from 1991.

Mid-Prairie is currently 17-0 this year, their best start to a season since 1991. The Golden Hawks will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Wilton to face the Beavers.
