A Des Moines woman who was scheduled to go to trial for dragging a Washington police officer with a stolen vehicle among other crimes has now pleaded guilty.
Court documents show that 43-year-old Mary Bella Brooks filed a guilty plea on January 21st to charges of possession with intent to deliver more than five grams of methamphetamine, a class B felony, interference with official acts with a dangerous weapon and two counts of second-degree theft, both class D felonies. In exchange for these pleas the State will recommend prison on all counts to run consecutively for a total of 40 years. The State agrees that due to her guilty plea Brooks should receive the benefit of the sentence reduction of one-half of one-third of the mandatory minimum, and agrees to request minimum fines for each count. Charges are expected to be dismissed for interference with official acts inflicting bodily injury, an aggravated misdemeanor, assault on persons in certain occupations with use of a weapon, failure to affix a drug stamp, and assault while participating in a felony, all class D felonies; and unlawful possession of a prescription drug and possession of a controlled substance first offense, both serious misdemeanors. On August 2nd, 2020 Brooks was found to be driving a stolen vehicle upon a traffic stop with a Washington police officer. She refused to exit the vehicle and drove away, dragging the officer with the vehicle. She then abandoned that vehicle and stole another vehicle from Washington leaving the area. KCII will bring you more information as it becomes official.
