Fiber Arts February returns to the Washington Public Library, offering events all month long for youth and adults to cozy up to.

The celebration rolls along with a ball winding party as part of the library’s monthly Sticks & Strings gathering at noon tomorrow, and this Saturday Library Assistant Director LeAnn Kunz is hosting a workshop on how to upcycle a sweater into a hat, “What you need to do is to bring a full wool sweater if possible, 65% or more wool is best and we need to have you felt it before you bring it. So felting is really simple. If you have a full wool sweater you just put it in your washing machine on hot and it should shrink right up into a really tight, dense fiber and that’s what we will use as our beginning to make the hats.”

All other supplies will be provided and the library has a few sweaters available if you do not have one. Space is limited for this free event, so Kunz asks to contact her to register, and participants 12 years and younger must have an adult. Those looking for some crafting inspiration can check out the library’s annual exhibit, titled this year as “Outer Space in the Case” located on the second floor. Iowa City textile artist Jan Friedman is also the featured exhibit in the library’s Helen Wilson Gallery this month.
