Having already clinched at least a piece of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division crown earlier in the week, the Winfield-Mt. Union boys made sure no sharing was needed last night with a 73-32 win at Columbus Community.

The Wolves controlled this right from the onset by racing out to a 19-4 first quarter lead and 37-9 at the break before initiating the running clock in the second half. Efficiency was the name of the game for the Wolves offense, as they shot a remarkable 74% from the floor including assisting on 28 of 31 made field goals. Cam Buffington and Carter Loyd were both perfect shooting on the night with Buffington finishing nine of nine with a game-high 22 points and Loyd was nine of nine with 19 points. The win pushed their undefeated league record to 15-0 to clinch the outright title. They are 18-1 overall. Columbus’ Tim Hills led the blue and white with 11 points and they fell to 4-15 overall, 4-11 in the league. WMU will face off with the first place south division team New London in the SEISC Shootout tomorrow. Columbus meets Notre Dame at West Burlington.

The WMU girls also won convincingly on Thursday with a 47-21 win. It was 13-4 after one, 23-6 at the break, and it never got closer in the final two quarters. Bradie Buffington went off for 21 points and Jobey Malone added nine for the road Wolves. Lily Coil led the Wildcats with six points and six boards. Winfield-Mt. Union finished second in the north with a 14-2 conference record and they improve to 17-3 overall with their shootout game tonight in Mediapolis against West Burlington. Columbus finished eighth in the north with a 2-14 mark and 3-17 overall. They play Cardinal in Lone Tree this evening.

Columbus celebrated senior night with individuals being recognized including Mason Hills-Carrier, Yahir Ayala, Marco Martinez, Maggie Sánchez, and Libby White.
