An Iowa City artist who uses textiles, fabrics, and other materials to make collages, tapestries and more is being featured this Fiber Arts February at the Washington Public Library.
Jan Friedman’s display at the Helen Wilson Gallery on the library’s second level and in the front entrance vestibule is titled “Weaving Through the Decades,” showing a variety of her work as she has weaved since 1974. Friedman received her Master’s of Art in textile design at the University of Iowa in 1980, and has conducted workshops in weaving, color, and dyeing across the United States, with pieces that have been featured in numerous exhibits and commissioned for private homes and corporate collections. Friedman says in her travels for work or pleasure, she always searches for a gallery to find inspiration from other people’s work, “Often just seeing art, other artists, something will spark, an idea that I can translate to my work, the tapestries or collage work. I’m always thinking ahead, you know when you’re an artist you don’t really retire. My goal right now is I don’t have to work as hard as I used to, but I enjoy what I do so I keep doing it.”
The public can view Friedman’s display all month long at the library, and get to meet her during an artist talk Tuesday February 15th from 2-3 p.m. For information on other Fiber Arts February events, visit here.
