The season came to an end for the Washington girls’ basketball team on Saturday when they struggled to get much going offensively falling to Williamsburg 42-24 in a first round class 3A regional.
As heard on KCII, the Demon zone defense kept them around for awhile trailing just 8-5 after one and 17-8 at the break. A 16-8 Raider third quarter gave them a cushion that Washington never threatened to cut into. The orange and black shot just 23% from the floor and Williamsburg turned them over 23 times. Alex Murphy led the offense with nine points and Maci Williams hauled in seven rebounds. Head Coach Shannon Rugg was really pleased with his team’s defensive effort once again. “Defensively we can stop some teams. We just put so much pressure on our defense because we struggle to score. That is something we will work on in the offseason. Our defense had them struggling at halftime, but we turned it over and allowed them to hit some shots to gain confidence. I am really proud of this group and how we battled all year. Elyse Hunt as our senior worked as hard as she possibly could every day. She knew what she was capable of and never tried to do too much.”
The Raiders improve to 13-9 and they battle West Marshall in the regional semifinal tomorrow. The Demons close the year 3-18 and they say goodbye to one senior in Elyse Hunt.
