The Winfield-Mt. Union boys basketball team opened the 1A district tournament Monday with a home win over the Highland Huskies 55-35. Highland had the game’s first basket, but the Wolves had a strong response, countering a 2-0 deficit with 17 straight points en route to a 23-7 lead after the first, and held a 39-14 lead at the half. The Wolves asserted control with a 16-6 run after half. Highland finished the contest with a 13-5 flurry. Despite going just three of 19 from long range and six of 12 at the line, Winfield-Mt. Union was able to find enough offense to pull away on 35 rebounds and 11 steals.
Cam Buffington led the Wolves attack with a game high 22 points, Abram Edwards went double double for the Wolves with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The two high fliers put on an aerial show for the home fans in Winfield that included dunks and alley-oops. The Huskies were led by nine points each from Connor Grinstead and Chase Schultz. Schultz also had 10 boards. The win is WMU’s 20th and their third over the Huskies this year. It sets up another conference rematch in Thursday’s district semifinal against Hillcrest Academy. The Wolves won both games with the Ravens this season, including a 54-28 victory last week to finish an undefeated Superconference North Division championship. Highland ends the season at 4-18 and says goodbye to seniors Grinstead, Schultz, Brenton Bonebrake, Kaige Vonnahme, Jaden Schmid, Trevor McFarland, and Devin Lovetinsky.
