A trip to the class 1A district 9 title game is on the line in Winfield tonight when the Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ basketball team welcomes Southeast Iowa Super Conference foe Hillcrest Academy in a semifinal bout.
The Wolves will try to make it three in a row against the Ravens having won both regular season meetings including a 54-28 final last week where Jake Edwards got hot from deep to finish with 17 points. The SEISC North division champs in the Wolves are 20-2 and advanced to this round after a 53-33 victory over Highland on Monday. Their defense has been stifling all year holding opponents to 34 points a night while scoring 56 points themselves. Cam Buffington and Abram Edwards have been double-double machines with Buffington averaging 19.4 points and 10.2 rebounds a game while Edwards collects 12.3 and 9.2 an outing. The Ravens are more than capable of playing spoiler coming in with a 15-6 record and they had a decisive 61-36 win over Holy Trinity in the quarters. They put up 50 points a game with Grant Bender accounting for 17.7 of them and 6.1 rebounds.
The winner will advance to battle Danville or Burlington Notre Dame on Tuesday. All of the action begins at 7 p.m. in Winfield and listen to the play-by-play on FM 106.1 KCII starting at 6:30 p.m.
