It’ll be a chilly day for March soccer in Southeast Iowa with a few area teams meeting up to kick off the season.

The Demon boys will open playing at the new Washington Wellness Park by welcoming Highland to town. The orange and black finished 9-6 last year and second in the Southeast Conference. They lost all-time leading scorer Zac Stout to graduation, but return six players that found the back of the net including Brayan Arreola and his seven goals. Plenty of experience returns in goal with DaShaun Westphal-Edwards, Will Gilchrist-Brock, and Cole Anderson. Highland was 0-11 in 2021 and graduated all of their scoring, but bring back goalie Eli Slaymaker and his 43 saves.

The Washington and Columbus Community girls meet up in Columbus Junction for non-conference action. The Demons picked up a victory in their opener on Tuesday by shutting out Centerville 3-0. Greta Rothe managed a pair of goals, Alex Murphy scored, and Elyse Hunt had three saves in goal. They are facing a Wildcat team that was 7-5 last year with all conference selection Juvixsa Valdez looking to build off of 15 tallies and Alynna Leos is a force in the net with 119 saves.

The boys’ game is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. this evening with the girls’ at 5 p.m.
