The first Iowa Crop and Progress Condition Report of 2022 released this week by the USDA highlighted the effect that the cold, winter-like start to the spring has had on area agriculture.

There were 1.6 days during the week ending April 3rd deemed suitable for fieldwork. Around the state, topsoil moisture levels were rated 9% very short, 25% short, 58% adequate and 8% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were 12% very short, 35% short, 49% adequate and 4% surplus. During the week, the statewide average temperature was 36.1 degrees, 7.3 degrees below normal with wetter than average conditions reported in eastern Iowa.

At this point in the season, 7% of the oat crop has been planted, two days behind last year but two days ahead of the five-year average. Livestock conditions were generally good, though feedlots were wet. Producers are reporting that the calving season continues.
