The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission is looking for another way to get Wayland on the map. Local residents are invited to a public informational meeting on Monday to discuss a proposal regarding a West Main Residential Historic District and its possible inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The historic district includes the 300 and 400 block of West Main Street in Wayland, with it’s 16 properties.
Work on this project dates back to 2015 when the Commission conducted a survey of Wayland and Jefferson Township that involved volunteers researching potential historic areas. Preliminary information was gathered for the town, and the West Main area was highlighted as having possible historic interest. Specific information on the history of the area will be presented at the meeting by project consultant Rebecca Lawin McCarley, and its relation to the NRHP and the benefits of having the properties listed there.
The meeting will be at 7 p.m., Monday, April 18th at the Wayland Community Center.
