A trip to Mount Pleasant was in store for the Washington soccer teams on Monday for meeting number two and the Southeast Conference rivals split a girl/boy doubleheader.
The No. 12 ranked Demon boys came in as the highest scoring offense in the state with 56 goals, but it was the defense that carried them to a 2-0 win over the Panthers (2-9). It took the orange and black just two minutes to get in the score column when Brendan Taylor assisted on a Fredy Aguilar goal. The 28th minute saw Emre Akgul give them a 2-0 cushion heading into the break and that score proved to hold up. Mount Pleasant struggled to get anything going offensively and in their few attempts at shots on goal, Will Gilchrist-Brock denied any scoring with two saves. Washington stays in the SEC hunt with a 5-1 league record and 8-1 overall.
The Demon girls have had their fair share of overtime contests and Monday they found themselves in a similar tussle, but on the short end of a 5-4 score. Trailing 3-2 with 16 minutes left, Greta Rothe took advantage of a penalty kick to tie the game and three minutes later Giselle Marcelino found the back of the net on a breakaway for a 4-3 advantage. Mount Pleasant (5-3) found the equalizer with four minutes remaining and almost had the game winner in the final seconds before goalie Elyse Hunt had a big save to force the extra period. In the 94th minute, the home Panthers found the game winner in double overtime, just a few weeks after Washington did the same in these rivals first meeting. The Demons are now 7-3 on the campaign and 3-3 in the SEC.
Both Washington teams get back on the pitch tomorrow against Fort Madison.
