The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with Summit Pharmacy in Fairfield to host an event to coincide with National Prescription Drug Takeback Day April 30th. From 10a.m. to 2p.m. Sheriff’s Office representatives will be at the pharmacy to accept items so that they can be disposed of in a safe manner. Jefferson County Deputy Angie Pohren tells KCII News about the program, how long they have been involved and what will be accepted. “Nationwide drug takeback day is a program through the DEA. There is nationwide participation from different law enforcement agencies. We started participating around 2014. It’s for unused or expired medication. People can bring those into the drop location to have them taken care of. It’s just a responsible way to keep medications from getting into the wrong hands.”

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the New London, Wayland and Winfield Police Departments to each host drug takeback sites on Saturday. From 10a.m. to 2p.m. members of the public are invited to drop off unused or unwanted prescription medications to any of those locations for disposal. Neither Henry or Jefferson County will accept sharp instruments or liquid medications.
