Roth Field in Wayland was full Thursday night for the annual WACO High School Ekstrand Relays.
The Washington Demon girls track team brought home the meet championship for the Class A girls division with their overall score of 150 points, Eddyville-Blakesburg was second with 121 points. The Demons had seven event titles on the night. Washington went 1-2 in the 100 with Rachel Sands taking the event in 13.44 seconds and Emery Walton second. Washington did the same in the 1500 where Lauren Horak won the title in 5:32.11 and Quincy Griffis was second. Horak spoke at the end of the night about her championship. “My teammate Quincy Griffis and I, we were kind of neck-and-neck. I knew I just wanted to stick with her, and I did. We really pushed each other that entire time. The last 300, we were really battling it out.”
Griffis won the title in the 3000 in 12:06.68, Ally Rees was the discus winner with her throw of 96’9″, Abigail Kleese won the 800 in 2:33.59. Kleese spoke about her win at the end of the night. “I wanted to win it. I just really wanted to win it and try to PR (Personal Record) as much as I could. It went really well. I stayed in front the whole time. That was just my goal, and it was a season PR.”
The Washington 4×800 of Kendal Hinrichsen, Kleese, Horak and Voss won in 10:31.37, and the distance medley team of Navaeh Brown, Sands, Eden Levetzow and Kleese were winners in 4:39.10.
In Class B, the WACO girls had the top area finish, taking second with 95 points. Danville won the team title with 141 points. The Warriors had three event titles on the night. They went first and second in the 200 with Ellah Kissell winning in 28.59 seconds and McKenzie Vradenburg runner-up. The WACO 4×100 team of Vradenburg, Halle Shelman, Amy Moran and Kissell finished in 54.14 seconds and that same team won the 4×200 in 1:55.93.
The Lone Tree girls were third in Class B with 79 points and three event titles. Rylee Shield won the 400 in 1:04.37, Vivian Zaruba the 1500 in 5:53.17 and the Lady Lion sprint medley team of Arlie Lorack, Avery Morarie, Zaruba and Shield were winners in 1:59.33.
The Highland girls were fourth with 59 points and three event titles. Mackenzie McFarland won gold in the 100 in 13.63 seconds, Jessica Krause with the discus at 104 feet and Sarah Burton the long jump in 16’6″.
The Winfield-Mt. Union girls were fifth with 53 points. Keetyn Townsley won the 100 hurdles in 17.12 seconds and the shuttle hurdle team of Morgan Grelk, Kayreanna Sharar, Josie Nelson and Townsley was also a winner in 1:14.37.
The Sigourney girls were sixth with 44 points. Top finishes included Reagan Clarahan third in the 400 hurdles and Josephine Moore third in the shot put.
The Hillcrest Academy girls were seventh with 43 points. The Ravens had two event championships with Leah Bontrager winning the 800 in 2:32.73 and Malia Yoder the high jump clearing 4’8″.
In boys action, The Washington Demons were third in Class A with 95 team points, Fairfield won the title with 166 points. The Demons had four championship events as Logan McDole won the 400 in 55.35 seconds, Micah Reese the two-mile in 10:16.42. The 4×100 team of Ethan Zieglowsky, Austin Rebbling, Clayton Streeter and Travis Leyden won gold in 46.91 seconds and the shuttle hurdle team of Tayven Stuart, James Strabala, Mason Morgan and Rebbling was a winner in 1:06.75.
In Class B, WACO was runner up with 100 points. Danville won the team title with 135 points. The Warriors had three championship events including 1-2 finishes in the 110 hurdles with Simeon Reichenbach winning in 15.41 seconds and Zach Schmitz second, and a 1-2 in the high jump with Braden Spain winning at 5’10” and Mason Miller second. WACO also got a title from the shuttle hurdle team of Schmitz, Miller, Isaac Oswald and Reichenbach in 1:04.40.
The Winfield-Mt. Union boys were third with 92 points. The Wolves had three event championships with Cam Buffington winning the 100 in 11.62 seconds, and the long jump in 19’2″. Gabe Hemsworth won gold in the 400 hurdles in 57.51 seconds.
The Highland boys were fifth with 58 points. The Huskies won three events with the shot put going to Devin Lovetinsky on a throw of 44’7.75″ and the team of Brenton and Logan Bonebrake, Tyler Thompson, and Connor Grinstead winning the 4×100 and 4×200 in times of 46.10 seconds and 1:36.65 respectively.
Lone Tree was sixth with 49 points. The Lions had a pair of runner-up finishes with the 4×200 team of Andrew Hotz, Andrew Gauley, Ethan Bockelman and Jader Barajas finishing second along with the shuttle hurdle team of Tyce Alt, Barajas, Gauley and Cade Patterson.
