With first place in the Southeast Conference standings up for grabs, it was the No. 11 Fort Madison boys’ soccer team that took control of the league by downing No. 12 Washington on Thursday by a 3-1 count.
Having beat the Demons 2-1 earlier in the season, the Bloodhounds looked poised for similar results on Thursday in Washington by scoring in the 15th minute and 31st to take a 2-0 advantage into the break. They got some insurance right out of half with another score and Washington battled back to find the back of the net with five minutes left, but time was not on the orange and black’s side. David Sevilla picked up his first goal of the spring on a header off of a corner kick from Manny Raymundo. Will Gilchrist-Brock managed five saves at the other end. Fort Madison had a pair of goals come from Mitchell Pothitakis.
Demon Head Coach Sally Hart pointed out some positives in the loss. “I really like the fact that we were able to regroup at half and continue to battle until the end. David came in off the bench in his first game and recorded his first goal. The team erupted when that happened and despite the score, we were always fighting. The teamwork we have this spring is top notch.”
Washington falls to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the SEC while Fort Madison is now 8-3 and a perfect 7-0 in the league. Three conference games remain with Washington next on the pitch Monday hosting Fairfield.
