An Iowa City man was found guilty by a Washington County jury of delivery of methamphetamine, a class C felony.
The verdict was delivered to 38-year-old Mark Poggenpohl Wednesday. County Attorney John Gish states the charge was from a March 18, 2021 incident in the parking lot of the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort. A person cooperating with law enforcement purchased 3.7 grams of methamphetamine from him for $150. The cooperating witness testified at trial that he saw several other bags of meth in Poggenohl’s backpack, and after the drug deal a narcotics detective saw the defendant with a backpack in the entrance of the casino.
Following the verdict, Poggenpohl admitted to being a habitual offender, having previously been convicted of two or more felonies. He was on parole from prison for a separate case when this incident occurred. Sentencing is scheduled for June 10th, where he may face 15-45 years in prison. Gish says the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson County Drug Task Force, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Coralville Police Department, and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement collectively earned this guilty verdict.
