A Washington group is inviting those who enjoy a star-spangled display that occurs five times a year to show their support.

The Optimist Club of Washington is seeking sponsorships for their Avenue of Flags that is installed on Washington Street from Hills Bank to Sunset Park, and on Iowa Avenue on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Veterans Day. Their display consists of around 150 flags, and Optimist Club member Jim Cluney says they could add around 30 more to fill in some empty areas, “We’ve had so many people show interest and they really like the flags but perhaps they don’t actually live on those streets and they wonder, ‘Well, how can we be a part of it?’ And we’re starting something now, it’s a sponsorship. There’s people along the routes where we’d like flags but maybe they can’t afford it or for whatever reason they aren’t putting a flag out. We’re trying to get other people on other streets, they like the idea so they can sponsor those individuals for putting a flag out.”

The club is asking for $40 for a single year sponsorship or $75 for two years of displays. The club would also appreciate help from local groups or organizations to install the flags, especially with Memorial Day approaching. To sponsor or volunteer, call Cluney at (319) 653-1735 or Don Pfeiffer at (319) 461-9939.
