Last week the City of Wellman put a contingency plan in place for water treatment following an equipment and well issue that caused them to change how they were disinfecting water. According to a statement released by the city this week, repairs have been made to the well and preliminary samples show that the issue has been resolved. They have changed back to the regular process of using free chlorine to treat water, instead of the temporary chloramine mixture.
Residents are advised during this time, a chlorine odor may accompany drinking water along with periods of discolored water. This can be alleviated by turning on faucets and running water until it clears. They also state that residual traces of ammonia and chlorine must be removed prior to use in kidney dialysis, commercial manufacturing of food and beverage, and use in fish aquariums and ponds.
Kidney dialysis patients are advised to contact their physician and follow their doctor’s recommendations. Medical centers performing dialysis commonly remove these chemicals. For more information contact Wellman Water at 319-330-1354.
