A pitcher’s duel broke out in Riverside on opening night of the baseball season Monday with Highland walking off Keota 2-1 in an all KCII area battle.
Keota’s Colten Clarahan and Highland’s Chase Schultz were dealing all night with the first run of the game coming in the Eagle favor in the sixth. Down to their final chance in the seventh, the Huskies played small ball to manufacture a pair of runs including the game winning sacrifice fly from Luke Miller to plate Ethan Paisley. The Huskies had just two hits with singles coming from Paisley and Trevor McFarland. Schultz got the victory throwing a complete game giving up one run on five hits and striking out 14. Clarahan threw 5 1/3 frames surrendering one knock and no runs while fanning 12 batters. The Eagles had five hits with Clarahan having two of them and he scored the lone tally.
Highland made it two in a row last night by dominating English Valleys 14-0 on the road headlined by a 12 run fifth inning. The team peppered 10 hits from eight guys including a pair of singles from McFarland and Connor Grinstead. Logan Bonebrake scored three times and Schultz delivered a solo shot. Paisley tossed six scoreless frames of two hit ball and striking out seven.
Highland starts up the summer 2-0 with their SEISC opener awaiting on Tuesday against Hillcrest Academy. Keota is 0-1 and they travel to Chariton tonight.
