It was the second and final round on the links Tuesday at the Iowa High School Boys State Golf Meet in Ames and one area individual is bringing home some hardware.
Washington’s Roman Roth found himself in a tie for 20th at the halfway point of the tournament at Veenker Memorial Golf Course, but the sophomore put together a solid round two to jump 13 spots and finish in a tie for seventh. He coupled an 84 first round with a 76 yesterday to finish with 160 (+16). He birdied hole 12 and 16 that helped him shoot even in the back nine to secure a medal. Roth led a Demon team that finished 10th out of 10 teams with a 36-hole tally of 741 (+165). After posting a 383 in the first round, Washington improved by 25 strokes yesterday and fired back with a 358. Luke Beenblossom shot a 96 yesterday for a 191 total, Teague Mayer improved by 13 strokes for a 90 second round and 193 altogether, John Prochaska shot a 96 for a 198 total, Grant Sobaski finished his round in 99 strokes and had a 201 total, and Isaac Vetter shot a 103 in the second for a 207. Waverly-Shell Rock’s Hogan Hansen beat the competition by 10 strokes for the individual crown with a 139 and Gilbert won the team title with a 633.
Hillcrest Academy’s Jace Rempel competed in the class 1A meet at Ames Golf and Country Club and the junior finished in a tie for 16th out of 57. The first Raven to compete at state since 1993 shot a 91 in his first round and followed that up with an 87 on Tuesday to have a 178 (+36) total. Five pars headlined his second round. Bennett Berger of Lake Mills was the individual champion with a 150 (+8).
