Returning home and producing a pair of wins was what the Sigourney summer teams accomplished on Monday in a sweep of Iowa Valley including another monumental performance on the softball diamond.
The No. 11 Savage softball team scratched across a couple early runs and laid the ground work for a 6-0 shutout of the Tigers (7-12, 4-8), but the story was in the circle. Sophomore Carly Goodwin twirled a no-hitter with 19 of the 21 outs coming via strikeout and she only allowed two runners to reach base. Goodwin also helped herself at the dish with a triple that brought in a run. Courtney Hemsley was 2-for-4 for a nine hit offense and the junior brought in two tallies. Sigourney is now 16-5 overall and remain atop of the South Iowa Cedar League with an 11-1 conference mark.
The baseball game saw the black and gold get down 7-3 in the sixth when the game made a complete 180 degree turn with a 10 run Savage frame that led to a 13-8 victory. The biggest knock in the prosperous inning was a bases clearing double with two away by Cade Streigle that gave them the lead. Clay Morse, Reid Molyneux, and Jake Moore all added two out RBI hits in the offensive explosion. Max Phillips threw four innings on the mound and Clay Morse was credited with the win recording five outs. They improve to 13-3 overall and 11-1 in the league.
Sigourney hosts Keota for round two tonight.
