The USDA has released their crop report for the state in the week ending July 3rd. There were six days deemed suitable for fieldwork during that time with activities including a completion of the first hay cutting, side dressing and crop spraying. Topsoil moisture levels were rated 3% surplus, 63% adequate, 27% short and 7% very short. Subsoil moisture conditions were rated 2% surplus, 66% adequate, 25% short and 7% very short. Corn is now silking at 2%, three days behind last year and four days behind average. Corn crop condition is rated 77% good to excellent. For the soybean crop, 13% is blooming, nine days behind last year and four days behind average. Soybeans were rated 77% good to excellent. For the oat crop, 91% has headed or beyond, one day behind last year. Oats are seeing 23% coloration, six days behind last year with the rating 79% good to excellent. Iowa’s first alfalfa cutting is nearly complete, registering 95% with a second cutting 23% complete. Hay conditions are rated 69% good to excellent and pasture condition is 58% good to excellent with livestock showing some stress due to heat and humidity.
