Showing why they are the No.2 ranked baseball team in the state is exactly what Davenport Assumption did on Friday when they ended Washington’s season by a 10-0 score in a first round class 3A substate game.

The bout in Eldridge started promising for the orange and black when Ethan Patterson and Kole Williams picked up first inning singles that gave them a scoring chance, but a back pick at third base ended the threat. The Knight offense that averages 9.3 runs a game was on full display early by loading the bags in the bottom half and Noah Mack launched a two out grand slam to left for a 4-0 advantage. They continued that momentum into a six hit second headlined by a two run shot from Max Stein to take a 9-0 lead. Williams came in on the hill to calm things down going 2 1/3 innings without allowing a run and Patterson delivered a scoreless fifth, but one more tally in the sixth for the Knights ended the game. Every batter recorded a knock and they finished with 15 hits led by Stein’s 3-for-4 night. Washington had four hits off of Chance Dreyer with Patterson going 2-for-3 and the other singles coming from Williams and Lucas Kroll. Ethan Zieglowsky was a bright spot defensively with the catcher throwing out a pair of runners at second base.

Head Coach TJ Rausch tells KCII Sports this senior class was special. “This group of seniors were fantastic. Guys that just showed up and led by example. They worked their tails off and it translated to the underclassmen. From their work ethic, to their humor, to how they carry themselves, this will be a group that we will definitely miss.”

Assumption improves to 28-6 and advance to play Keokuk (12-18) in the second round on Monday. Washington concludes the summer 6-21 and say goodbye to six seniors in Williams, Kroll, Zieglowsky, Tim Willits, Matt Wolf, and Zeke Slagel.
