A pitcher’s duel broke out at Schafer Field on Friday in a class 1A regional softball semifinal and No. 11 Sigourney was on the right side of a 2-1 score against Wapello (16-12). 

Carly Goodwin responded after giving up an early run to deal seven innings of four hit ball and striking out 12 Arrow batters without allowing a free pass. The Savage offense only had three hits, but cashed in during the late innings with Darby Mitchell and Ava Fisch bringing in runs. Fisch and Goodwin recorded singles and Kenzi VanDenHeuvel had a double. Goodwin and Courtney Hemsley each stole a pair of bags and crossed the plate in the win. 

The Savages improve to 23-5 and they try to clinch their second straight state bid tonight at No. 7 Twin Cedars in the regional final. The Sabers are 25-3 and qualified after beating Highland 4-1 on Friday. Star pitchers will be on display with Goodwin having a 0.41 ERA in 121 innings of work and the Sabers’ Grace Bailey has a 1.25 ERA in 95 innings.
