KCII starts up our top 10 countdown of the best sports stories from the 2021-22 academic year for our area schools and today we look at number 10. In this countdown we take a look at Washington and today takes us to record breaking seasons on the pitch.

Both Demon soccer squads put up win totals that hasn’t been seen in awhile including the girls having double digit victories for the first time. Washington concluded the spring 10-7 and third in the Southeast Conference with a 5-5 mark. Senior Greta Rothe was co-SEC player of the year with the fourth most goals in the league with 23 and she also garnered second team all state honors. Giselle Marcelino found the back of the net 25 times to be named first team all SEC and Lindsay Diaz had the same recognition as a defensive stopper. The best stretch of the season came at the beginning when they won their first four including an exciting 5-4 win over rival Mount Pleasant.

The boys’ team also raised the standard for the program with their most wins in the varsity bound era with a 12-5 mark. They finished second in the league with a 7-3 mark and had a six game win streak in April where they knocked off four conference opponents and beat Mediapolis 2-1 in PKs. The balanced squad had four players be named first team all conference in Fredy Aguilar, Randy Huertero, Manny Raymundo, and Brayan Arreola. A total of 10 players scored at least five times led by Aguilar’s 12 and the defense finished with eight shutouts on the year. The Demons graduated six players, but bring back a lot of the cast for a potential run next year.

Our top 10 countdown is just beginning with the two week process continuing tomorrow with number nine on our list.
