Our top 10 countdown of the best sports stories from the 2021-22 academic year continues with number seven on our list for area schools of Columbus Community, Highland, Lone Tree, Winfield-Mt. Union, WACO, Sigourney, and Keota. The seventh best story takes us to the wrestling mat with Southeast Iowa having another year with podium finishes at state.
Out of these schools, eight grapplers advanced to the state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena on February 17th-19th and four of them came home with medals. WACO’s Jonah Clark had a magical run at the big dance finishing way ahead of his seed placing second at 220 lbs in class 1A. The senior opened the tournament with a pair of pins and had an exciting 6-3 decision victory in the semifinals before falling 8-1 in the title match. Columbus Community/Winfield-Mt. Union’s Lane Scorpil dominated the lower weights throughout his high school career and he capped it off with a fourth place showing at 120 lbs in class 1A. Sigourney teammates Cade Molyneux and Conner Reed closed out their wrestling campaigns with sixth place finishes at 160 and 220 lbs, respectively. Other area state qualifiers included Sigourney’s Reanah Utterback at 106 lbs, WACO’s Louden Huisenga at 145 lbs, Highland’s Easton Schlabaugh at 113 lbs, and teammate Carlos Valenzuela at 132 lbs.
We continue our area schools countdown tomorrow with number six on our list.
