Highland Principal Angela Hazelett received the Iowa Choral Directors Association’s Outstanding Choral Advocate Award on July 25th, 2022.
The award was created in 2022 to recognize individuals who have contributed to the advancement of choral music in schools, churches, or communities. Hazelett presumed she was nominated by Jennifer McClenahan, the district’s Middle-School and High-School choir teacher, in October 2021, before finding out in May 2022 that she had won.
Hazelett was humbled and honored to receive the award. She stated that it made her and other district members’ best efforts for the choir program feel acknowledged. She also mentioned that the award means a lot to her because she wants kids to be encouraged to join choir or other fine arts programs.
In addition to the goal of allowing children to participate in these fine arts programs and making sure that it fits their schedule, Hazelett mentions that in the long term, “well I think always the goal, eventually, is to be able to pass a bond and get an auditorium here. That is a long term plan we would all like to see.”
The auditorium would be utilized for the aforementioned choir and other fine arts programs.
