Winfield-Mt. Union made a statement on the gridiron in week zero and the No. 9 ranked Wolves will try to keep that momentum into this week when they make a trip to Moravia for a non-district 8-player showdown.

In the anticipated Saturday showcase in Martensdale, the Wolves rocked a dome team from last year in Audubon by a 68-36 final score. Trailing by two at the break, WMU outscored the Wheelers 46-12 in the second half in part by seven total touchdowns from all-state running back Cam Buffington. The junior rushed for 273 yards with five scores, had a pick-six, and returned a kick off for a touchdown. Moravia is coming off of an impressive win as well with a 38-26 triumph over New London in week zero. Big plays were the catalyst in the win with Shane Helmick completing seven passes for 218 yards and four touchdowns with three of them being to Riley Hawkins. The Mohawks went 3-5 last year including losing to the Wolves 84-34 in the opener, but Buffington tells KCII Sports this is a different group in 2022. “They have a nice team with good athletes all over. We need to focus on wrapping up and gang tackling. They played really well against New London and their passing game is much improved so that is something we have to shut down.”

The action gets started at 7 p.m. tomorrow in Moravia.
