At the September 14th Washington Community School Board meeting, the board held a discussion talking about possible changes and adjustments that could be made to the early retirement plan. The changes will possibly undergo a vote at the next school board meeting, which will be held on October 12th at 7:00 pm.
Washington Community Schools Superintendent Willie Stone talked with KCII about what purpose these changes will serve. “When we are able to have certified staff retire, we are able to save around $20,000 for each certified staff member that retires. Now there’s a plus and minus with that because while you’re able to save dollars but we have teachers with years of experience that may retire, which will be hard to replace. Ultimately the board views retirement as a budgeting scalpel, a way to save money without having to cut extra teachers.”
