Two of the area’s 8-player football teams will meet on a homecoming Friday as the Lone Tree Lions travel to take on the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves. Both squads look to build off of wins last week.
Lone Tree has won three straight since losing their season opener. After piling up five total touchdowns two weeks ago, Lions junior quarterback Ethan Bockelman guided the offense to a season-high 65 points in a 49-point win over Tri-County. Bockelman leads the team in passing and rushing yards, while freshman Emmett Burke has emerged as the team’s leading receiver, and seniors Caden Smith and Joe Boxwell anchor the defense.
Winfield-Mount Union broke up a string of back-to-back losses with a 52-12 victory over HLV last week, improving to 3-2. Star Wolves junior Cam Buffington needed to only touch the ball 14 times on offense to rack up over 170 yards from scrimmage and score three touchdowns. Buffington is now up to 775 yards rushing, 232 yards receiving and 17 total TDs. WMU is lead on defense by Buffington and his junior teammate Abram Edwards, who is wreaking havoc on opposing QBs with 10 tackles for loss and six sacks.
Winfield-Mount Union won last year’s matchup 32-22, breaking up a Lone Tree 3-game win streak in the series. Kickoff this Friday night for WMU homecoming is at 7.
